Welcome,
By 2032, there will be more people in the U.S. aged 50 and older than those under 18. While the widely cited "demographic tipping point" where people aged 65+ outnumber those under 18 is projected for 2034, the group aged 50+ is much larger and already very close to surpassing the under-18 population today. By 2030, all Baby Boomers will be age 65 or older. Amidst these trends, insurance carriers are discontinuing programs and implementing stricter guidelines for coverage. We're continually monitoring these kinds of statistics so our S.W.A.N. NEMT experts are aware of market changes in the industry in order to provide the best available solutions for owners and operators. In other industry news, Kia and BraunAbility have unveiled an all-electric, wheelchair-accessible taxi and rideshare concept for New York. The Kia PV5's EV platform has been engineered specifically to support conversions, to help reduce the complexity of modification and allow conversion partners to provide optimum quality while reducing cost. The S.W.A.N. team will be attending the annual NEMTAC Transform conference in August. The event brings together providers, brokers, payers, regulators, technology partners and subject matter experts to advance safe, reliable and equitable NEMT through education and collaboration. I'm very pleased to have accepted the position as co-chair for NEMTAC's Insurance Risk Management Association Committee (IRMAC). An especially exciting aspect of that role is an opportunity to help build the State-by-State NEMT Resource Hub. It's a centralized reference on publicly available and nationally recognized information describing how non-emergency medical transportation is administered across U.S. states and territories. You can check it out, as well as other NEMT reference tools, by clicking here. Lastly, later this year, BraunAbility will once again hold its Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Workshop in Indiana. A special highlight of the event is an opportunity to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, experience pit row and view race practice laps. Here Are Two Insurance Types
for Avoiding Risk of Liability Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) is designed to protect businesses from employee-related lawsuits such as wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment. Another important category to consider is Cyber Liability Insurance that addresses data breaches. Both types of coverage can be critical in managing remote work, digital data and reputation management risks. These areas are very important considerations for NEMT fleet operators. Some carriers offer combined policies to address both cyber incidents and management liability for comprehensive coverage. In implementing these programs, regular staff training along with strong communication policies should be in place to help reduce risks in both areas. HIPAA compliance plays a key role here and is typically a prerequisite for coverage. You'll need to be able to show internal policies and procedures that are in place as well as Business Association Agreements (BAAs) with vendors. Another area of potential risk is the use of fleet technology such as GPS trackers, in-vehicle tablets and driver apps that can expand your potential attack surface. And be aware that subcontractor risk is real. If you're using brokers or scheduling platforms (like MTM or Modivcare), you need to ensure your policy addresses third-party breaches should they occur. These issues are relevant regardless of fleet size. Even small operators aren't exempt. In fact, breaches involving even a few dozen patient records can trigger notification obligations. DRIVE Program Portal Helps
Fleets Track Insurability We continue to expand and enhance our DRIVE program, and initiative designed to help your fleet grow stronger, safer and more insurable through a systematic, proactive and hands-on approach to insurance program management. DRIVE stands for: Direct Communication, Regulatory Compliance, Insurance Strategy, Value-Adds That Move the Needle and Education. A high-value feature of the program is the DRIVE Safety Scorecard. This monthly risk management system tracks where you stand and where you can improve. Factors include documentation gaps, expiring or missing records, opportunities to strengthen underwriting submissions, and progress month over month. Our goal is to help you achieve the highest possible score at last 90 days prior to policy renewal. In addition and based on industry research, the financial impact can be in the range of $15,000 to $245,000 annually in operational efficiencies! The latest addition currently in the works for the DRIVE program is a portal that will provide fleet owners with a score based on how many documents they have shared with us and how up to date they are in terms of operating by best practices. The higher the score, the better position you'll be in for attracting solid insurance carriers as opposed to potentially having your coverage dropped. Additionally, those with higher scores are often better positioned to secure meaningful NEMT contracts. Carriers are stricter than ever and require more documentation.
